We’re delighted to announce that one of Lochaber’s best known business people and Lochaber Chamber of Commerce member, Angus MacDonald, was awarded the ‘UK Entrepreneur of the Year’ award at the 11th annual Spears Wealth Management Awards at London’s Dorchester Hotel last week.
Angus is well known in Lochaber as someone with a real passion for his home area, as well as for business. His business interests include the education publisher ICS Learn, the wind turbine supplier Renewable Parts Ltd as well as the fast-growing waste management company SWR. He first made his name in the 1990s and 2000s by building two successive financial publishing empires.
Since 2007 MacDonald has served as chairman and largest shareholder of the three businesses in different sectors, with a combined turnover of more than £45m employing 170 staff and with profit of around £4.5m in 2017. He is also the founder of the Caledonian Challenge, the annual corporate endurance race that raised around £15m in its 20-year history, and is a vice president and a leading fundraiser for the National Trust for Scotland.
The judges praised MacDonald as “a serial entrepreneur with a conscience, with a genuine love of the West Highlands”. Awarded the OBE in 2014 for services to the Highlands, MacDonald also heads the Moidart Trust, a “venture philanthropy” fund that helps grow West Highland businesses. Angus was “delighted to have won” the award, adding that “it demonstrates that UK-wide businesses can be built from this part of the world.”
He said: “I am passionate about this beautiful and diverse area of Scotland and devote a lot of my time trying to helping West Highland entrepreneurs stay in that area and thrive there.”
Angus will be demonstrating his commitment to helping businesses in the area again this week when he serves as one of the Dragons in Lochaber Ideas Week’s ‘Dragons’ Glen’ business competition on Wednesday 15th November. One lucky business will be awarded a £10,000 cheque from Foundation Scotland to help turn their business dreams into reality.
Come along to the Moorings at 5pm to watch Angus and his fellow business dragons put the contestants through their paces as they compete for the investment in their business.
