Made In LochaberCreative & Media
Made in Lochaber is a group of food and craft producers living and working in the Lochaber area, based on the West coast of the Highlands of Scotland – we were formerly known as Lochaber Crafts and Food Producers Association.
Our membership comprises all sorts of different small and micro businesses practicing a wide range of activities. Made in Lochaber aims to support all of their efforts, promote their work, help them to find new markets for their produce, and provide new outlets and ways to market for them. Some of these businesses are open to visitors, can demonstrate their activities and sell their wares on site, others participate in local markets and sales, or sell their work through other outlets.
From freshly butchered venison and cured meats, smoked produce, jams and chutneys, to fine art, textiles, ceramics and woodwork, and much more besides, Lochaber has it all to offer.
A large proportion of Lochaber comprises traditional crofting communities, and this is often apparent in the types of art and food produced. Crafting and home food production developed on crofts as a necessary way of life, rather than as a hobby or passtime, and those skills were passed down through the generations. There is a strong tradition of ‘make-do-and-mend’, people are used to having to turn their hand to whatever needs doing, and this has led to an inherent creativity, boosted of course by our beautiful surroundings.
In addition to this, the slower pace of life and outstanding natural environment have long been a draw for creatives elsewhere, looking for an inspiring place to visit or live and develop their artistic and artisan endeavours.
