Using a room and pillar method, vast deposits of white sandstone are carefully extracted, then processed on-site. The sandstone is drilled, blasted, and transported to the surface, where it undergoes crushing, washing, and screening to ensure the highest quality. This creates a silica sand that is exceptionally white and low in iron, making it perfect for high-quality glass manufacturing. Lochaline’s sand is responsible for producing about one-third of all window glass made in the UK. Beyond glassmaking, it finds its way into industries such as ceramics, agriculture, silicon carbide production, and even movie sets!
